Detailed Day Wise Itinerary
1
Day 01 - Nairobi Departure & Afternoon Game Drive
Depart Nairobi CBD or JKIA airport by 07:00, heading south through the Athi Plains and small Maasai market towns. Cross into Amboseli National Park through the Kimana Gate. Check in to your lodge for lunch, then at 15:00 head straight to Observation Hill - a volcanic cone offering a 360-degree view of the entire park, swamps and Kilimanjaro (clearest in the late afternoon when clouds often part). Evening game drive back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
2
Day 02 - Full Day Amboseli: Elephants, Predators & Dawn Kilimanjaro
Pre-dawn wake-up at 05:30. Kilimanjaro is almost always crystal clear at dawn before clouds build by mid-morning - this is the definitive photographic moment. Drive to the open plains east of Ol Tukai for golden-light elephant shots with Kilimanjaro's Kibo Peak as backdrop. Return to lodge for a cooked breakfast. Rest during midday heat. Afternoon game drive along the Enkongo Narok swamp edges for hippo sightings, lion and cheetah. Night drive back through the swamp edges.
3
Day 03 - Swamp Walk, Maasai Village & Southern Plains Game Drive
Morning guided nature walk along the Enkongo Narok swamp with a licensed Maasai guide. This is one of the few parks in Kenya where walking safaris are permitted. Watch waterbirds, monitor lizards and elephant at close range on foot. After lunch, visit a traditional Maasai boma (village) - learn about cattle culture, traditional medicine, beadwork and warrior traditions. Late afternoon game drive on the southern plains tracking cheetah and wild dog. Sundowner at Observation Hill.
4
Day 04 - Full Day Game Drive & Predator Focus
Dedicated full-day game drive with a packed lunch, covering the northern and eastern sectors of the park. These areas see fewer vehicles and offer the best lion and leopard sightings. The park's resident elephant matriarchs - well known to researchers and guides alike - are most active in the morning near the lugga (seasonal rivers). Afternoon drive through the Longinye swamp circuit. Return to lodge for dinner and overnight.
5
Day 05 - Final Dawn Drive & Return to Nairobi
Rise at 05:30 for one final Kilimanjaro dawn experience and a last close encounter with the great elephant herds as they move from the swamp to the open plains. Return to lodge for breakfast at 08:30. Check out by 09:30. Drive back via the Kimana Gate, stopping at a roadside Maasai curio market for handcraft shopping. Arrive Nairobi CBD by 14:00 or JKIA airport by 14:30.
Special Notes
1
KILIMANJARO VISIBILITY: The mountain is most visible at dawn between 06:00 and 09:00 before afternoon cloud cover builds. This is not a weather guarantee - cloud cover is possible year-round, though December to February and July to October offer the clearest conditions.
2
PARK FEES: Amboseli National Park fees are included but are subject to KWS annual revision. Any increase in effect at the time of travel will be communicated and charged at cost.
3
VEHICLE SHARING: Shared game drives allow a maximum of 6 guests per vehicle. Private vehicle hire is available at an additional cost of $120 per day.
4
CHILDREN: Minimum age on game drives is 5 years. Children aged 12 and above are charged at the adult rate.
5
WALKING SAFARI: The guided swamp walk on Day 3 is subject to park ranger availability and weather conditions. In the unlikely event it is cancelled, an alternative game drive will be substituted.
6
ROAD CONDITIONS: The Nairobi-Amboseli road via Emali is largely tarmacked. The final 20 km into the park via Kimana Gate is graded murram road - manageable in a standard 4x4 but expect dust in the dry season.
